Founding and Early History
Located on the north bank of the Fraser River, New Westminster is a city situated within Metro Vancouver in British Columbia, Canada. The area was first inhabited by indigenous peoples, including the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations, who had established a settlement there long before European arrival. British Columbia’s Capital
During the colonial era, the British government decided to create the Colony of British Columbia in 1852. In anticipation of its establishment, a party led by Colonel Richard Blanshard was sent to Victoria Island (now Victoria) but became stranded there due to bad weather conditions and eventually chose New Westminster as their destination for setting up the new colony’s capital instead.
However, an unfortunate sequence of events unfolded when gold rushes in the Fraser River valley drew massive numbers of people away from the area. Meanwhile, disputes over land ownership rights erupted between local settlers, Native populations, and government officials, ultimately resulting in a significant decrease in population as these newcomers rapidly shifted their interests towards mining activities along other nearby rivers like the Thompson and Cariboo.
Early Development
